I know everyone's giving serious war movies, but I'll nominate a few war comedies:

Good Morning Vietnam (Robin Williams is excellent in it, although I've always thought the middle of the move drags)

Biloxi Blues (Christopher Walken is great as the drill sergeant, and I've always found the scene where they talk about what they would do if they knew they were going to get KIA in a week to be very funny and poigiant at the same time)

The General (A Buster Keaton flick that had my son and I cracking up. Plus it had one of the first incredible movie special effects with the train crashing off the bridge)

    1. Battle of Algiers
    2. Wooden Crosses (A French World War I film from the early 30s. It follows a group of gung ho recruits as they get decimated in their first battle. Way ahead of its time in terms of realism.)
    3. The Great Escape
    4. M*A*S*H
    5. Paths of Glory

The boot camp movie could have its own category:
    Biloxi Blues
    Stripes
    Full Metal Jacket
    Boys in Company C
    GI Jane
    Heartbreak Ridge

The EM-50 Incident of 1981 was America's great unknown war.

JOHN WINGER: "It's Czechoslovakia. It's like going into Wisconsin."

RUSSELL ZISKE: "Hey, I got my ass kicked in Wisconsin once."

    2. Deer Hunter
    3. Apocalypse Now
    4. Patton
    5. Platoon

So many of them (great idea for a thread). I think some of those listed are a bit of a reach to be considered war movies. Some are movies about other things that happen to be going on during war time.

Killing Fields is another great one. I really loved Hurt Locker. Three Kings was really good. Black Hawk Down was just awesome.

    1) All Quiet On The Western Front. Based on the Erich Maria Remarque novel. A 30's film on the horror of WW1 which, for good reason, was called "The War to End all Wars"

    2) Apocalypse Now

    3) Deer Hunter

4 The Great Escape. A bunch of hokum loosely based on a real incident

    5) Bridge on River Kwai (see above)
