Never heard of Von Ryan's Express till now, but see that it starred the Chairman. Better than his turn in Cannonball Run II? Hard to beat that work.

The Longest Day belongs on any list. It's got D-Day. The Duke, Connery, Hank Fonda, Paul Anka, Bob Mitchum AND Richard Burton. Pretty much the definitive "glorified" war movie (it was rated G), before post-Vietnam realism films.
I'll throw in Patton, Das Boot, Blackhawk Down and Gettysburg.
HM - 84 Charlie Mopic, Three Kings, Lone Survivor.

Saving Pvt. Ryan kind of goes without saying.

Don't know about the time frame but Zero Dark Thirty (not to be confused with Zero Dark 23) and The Hurt Locker were good, not great. Certainly not making any top 5 list.

Full Metal Jacket rates for me as one of the best too.

Fort Apache is a war movie. Maybe the best non WWII war movie.
