First Team or first team

Which is it? Dave Smith is a First Team All-American or Dave Smith is a first team All-American?

I've seen both styles; just wondering which is correct. If this has been posted before, please direct me to the thread.

    Thanks!

If you use the full name and do it thusly:

Uconn was named to the Dunkin Donuts Connecticut Basketball Coaches Association All-State First Team, I would leave it up as a proper name.

In any other case, I would put it down.

    I would say first-team all-American, but that's just me.

    I would say first-team All-American.

Remember to use hyphens if an adjective (first) modifies a noun (team).

I've always thought all-American looked like a typo. Kind of like "champing at the bit".

How about saying he's an All-American, not using "first team." Can't we assume that if you're called an All-American, you're not a second- or third-teamer or else you'd be referred to that way?

    He was named a first-team All-American.
He finished on the All-American first team.
