    Taking it all too hard

    By I SHOULD COCO

Like many college football superpowers, it’s the University of Michigan fans — more than the actual players or team — that really get under your skin.

Bragging about “our” great season, even though they’ve never been within 300 miles of Ann Arbor, let alone graduated from its university. Pointing out how Big Blue has beaten your Big Ten school about 49 out of the last 50 times. And worst of all, rambling on about how the Wolverines win with class ... “the Michigan way.”

Living in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the late 1990s was a great time in my life in just about every way ... except for football. While covering ugly high school games between wing-T offenses was great for deadline purposes, it was tough to take all the ribbing from U-M fans as I roamed the sidelines with camera, notebook and Iowa Hawkeyes “chook.”

The fall of 1997 was especially tough, as the Wolverines rolled through a 12-0 season, Charles Woodson won the Heisman Trophy, and Michigan was declared national champions in the season-ending Associated Press poll. Yoopers who never dreamed of visiting A-Squared came out of the woodwork to jump on the maize-and-blue bandwagon.

But you know what they say about getting to the top: there’s only one direction to go. And the Wolverines’ descent has accelerated in recent years, especially since 1997 coaching hero Lloyd Carr retired following Michigan’s Jan. 1, 2008, bowl game. U-M fans grumbled about his teams losing 6 of their last 7 games against Ohio State, about a home loss to Appalachian State, and the program’s inability to reach the BCS national championship.

Those concerns seem quaint now. After Brady Hoke led Michigan to 11 wins and a Sugar Bowl win in 2011 (mostly behind RichRod’s players), the Wolverines’ number of wins and stature within the Big Ten has been sinking fast.

Some Go Bluers thought last season’s 7-6 mark, shellacking by Kansas State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (!) and Michigans’ 102nd nationally-ranked running game was the bottom. Then the Wolverines were embarrassed at home by Utah and Minnesota in September, and face an uphill climb to even qualify for any bowl game this year.

Really, all Michigan has left to play for is to spoil the seasons of its two bitter rivals, Michigan State and Ohio State. The first chance comes on Saturday, and the once-mighty Wolverines are 17-point underdogs to the nationally-ranked Spartans.

It’s almost enough to make me feel sorry for Michigan fans ... or not.

“Fail by those victors pungent, fail by those bungling heroes ...” :D

Florida State's narrow win over Notre Dame didn't sway any SportsJournalists.com voters to the Seminoles' side. In fact, we now have three teams getting first-place votes, and much like the AP poll, have four of the top five spots filled by SEC West teams.

And with help from their above-mentioned win over the struggling Wolverines, we welcome the Minnesota Golden Gophers to our poll, for the first time I can remember. Their loss at TCU doesn't look so bad as the season moves along (that's how we Big Ten fanbois roll ... we compare best losses :))

... And then there were three

    By I SHOULD COCO

As musicians ranging from Blind Melon to De La Soul to the Schoolhouse Rock house band have noted, there’s something about the number 3.

So it’s only appropriate that there are three remaining unbeaten FBS teams as we publish and contemplate the results of our third poll.

A trio of things to point out:

Will the Thundering Herd get any respect from the Playoff Pickin’ Committee? We’ll find out tomorrow between commercials and various look-at-me bits on the Endless Self Promotion Network. My prediction: Marshall will be ranked No. 25, if at all. As we’ve noted here before, there’s the adult table and the kiddie table in the College Football Ca$h banquet, and it’s clear where schools from Conference USA sit, no matter how good their team.

Three one-loss teams will be in the playoff. Of the Power 5 conference teams, there’s only one I can foresee going unbeaten, and that’s Florida State. If the Seminoles get through Thursday night’s game at Louisville, their remaining schedule looks like this: Virginia, at Miami, Boston College, Florida. And then, probably, a rematch of their cakewalk over Duke in last year’s ACC championship.

Mississippi State, on the other hand, is an unbroken pinata which still must face swings from the biggest kids at the birthday party — Alabama and Ole Miss, and potentially Georgia.

And as an aside, it will be interesting to see how the Pickin’ Committee values head-to-head matchups in its first set of rankings. You know, in situations such as Ole Miss and Alabama each having an SEC West road loss, with the tiebreaker being how the Rebels and Crimson Tide fared in their Oct. 4 matchup. Speaking of that ...

Who’s No. 3? With every SportsJournalists.com voter listing Mississippi State and Florida State in the top two spots on their ballot, the key question this week is who’s our third-best team. The answer is below in the poll listing, but here’s the teams which received No. 3 votes: Notre Dame (6), Auburn (3), Alabama (2), Oregon (1) and Marshall (1).

We like to keep things interesting around here! And without further ado, the rest of this week’s SportsJournalists.com college football poll:

Bingo on the Genesis part (although ... And Then There Were Three is actually an album title. Whoops, my bad).

The byline blurb is based on something in a state adjacent to you, KY ... (hint)
