For those who never got a chance to read it, think about USA Today's sports section, then ponder it's exact opposite. That was The National.

I had just started J-school when it started up. It was pretty hard to find here, but not if you knew where to look. I ended up reserving a copy every day at a newsstand.
All I wanted to do was go and sleep on the doorstep of the place, pull a hunger strike, whatever, until they broke down and gave me a job.
Unfortunately, by the time I graduated, it was a moot point.

They started a new daily newspaper in my city at roughly the same time. Thought that might be a good option, too.
Folded in less than a year, but at least it was a great opportunity for people who graduated a couple years ahead of me.

Except that people generally go to sports Web sites to keep updated on games. I don't think a whole site based on being a more literate version of espn.com's Page 2 would be a guaranteed hit. I mean, I don't think sportsjones.com has become a widely considered must-visit.

I'd buy it again in a minute.

That, and no one read it -- with the exception of everyone on this board.

Especially since it hasn't been updated since July 2001.

(Who the hell recycled this old thread, anyway?)

Chazp has decided to resurrect year-old threads today for whatever reason.

Why all the dredging up of year-old threads?

    Edit: Doc explains.

Like anywhere near where i grew up, for example. I had never heard of the National until 1994, when one of my college professors told me about it.

The only place I ever saw the National on sale was the Cincinnati airport.

I had never been back past 15 or so pages and just some great stuff packed in the back.
