    Not that he's a bad writer or has written bad books in the last few years, but The Last Amateurs was his over-the-falls moment with me. At that point he transitioned from a thoughtful author with a great eye for detail and scene-setting to a pious, ham-handed zealot who belabors a shaky point to uncomfortable ends (yes, John, the only true student-athletes in the NCAA are in your precious Patriot League, we got that message on 30 of the last 33 pages). Well-written, which makes it more infuriating because it's not some sort of bizzaro world fanboi ranting.

    Usually, I agree with you. Not in this case, however. I gave up on The Civil War about halfway through.
