Sorry but poker is NOT a sport. A game, fine. But not a sport.

one of these days I hope to understand the allure of watching hours of men staring at each other on TV. I'll bet good money I never will though.

does it still get ratings? It must be pretty cheap to produce, but no one I know still watches poker on TV, as opposed to the peak of the WPT, where a lot of my poker playing friends watched most episodes.

So basically the feds want their slice of the pie? Why not just tax the sites?

One, they are all based overseas and thus hard to tax.

Two, the casino lobby is powerful and doesn't want the competition.

I was on the wave that enjoyed the hell out of poker back in 2004 and 2005 but now don't watch a lick of it.

The casinos don't care if it is limited to poker. They don't make money off of the game.

According to a tweet by CNBC's Darren Rovell:

    "World Series Poker main event participants: 8,776 ('06), 6,258 ('07), 6,844 ('08), 6,494 ('09), 7,319 ('10)"

I think the peak was in 2004, as Hold Em was HUGE and WPT, ESPN, Fox Sports, etc., were all over it. Numbers are increasing again, though, which is interesting.

Oh, but I suspect the casinos do care because they're seeing $$$ in the online business.

PokerStars was always better anyway. The panic threads on poker sites are delicious.
