There was a kid in our county who tore up the small-schools circuit for two years -- like 25-30 ppg as a frosh and soph -- and he wanted to transfer as a junior to our school, which was quite the powerhouse in the largest division. But he lives well outside the district -- not even in the same town -- so the request is denied.

Two weeks later, "his parents" "buy" a house less than a mile from our school. He goes on to become all-state and later start for an NCAA Sweet Sixteen team.

I don't think that's any worse than faking your address so your kid can go to a different school.

Most likely your first scenario, and they're entirely right. Kids (and their parents) who legitimately live in the district, abide by all eligibility rules, have already invested time and money and work into the program, have every right to get pissed about johnny-come-lately hotshot transfers waltzing in.

In any case, these kids' living arrangements are being horsed around with in order to evade/violate eligibility rules, if not legal school residency requirements, and the mother knows it.

    Games -- forfeited.

Kids -- ineligible for the rest of the season.

    Mother -- moron.

Coach -- on paper-thin ice. If it's shown he knew about/arranged the bogus living arrangement -- fire his ass. Unless he's an absolute idiot, he's got "plausible deniability," but still the superintendent should call him in and say, "watch your ass, smart guy." And if he doesn't have "plausible deniability," say, "I'm firing you for being an idiot."

    End of story.

But the moral of the story is:

Kids -- clean your damn rooms!

Enrolling at Dillon High under a fake address did not cost Luke Cafferty a scholarship. Granted, it was a scholarship for a crummy school which he turned down in order to go into the Army and risk being shot and killed, but it didn't cost him a scholarship.

Skippy, it's still true in the interwebs age: You have two ears and one mouth so you can listen twice as much as you speak. Letting your fingers do the talking hasn't won you any sympathy around here.

Perry County is the poorest in Tennessee. I think we can rule out moving for the sake of great education.

Dude, you are going to be accused of so many things by so many crazy parents ... and crazy people in general.

    1) You cost someone's kid a scholarship when you don't write about them.
    2) You only cover Team X when they lose.
    3) You favor School X in your coverage.
    4) You never write enough about Sport X.
    5) You're screwing over the JV kids/freshmen teams because, after all, they try just as hard as the varsity.
    6) You put us on page 2B to screw us over! We won! We should have been on the front!
    7) What the f*ck did you put us on the front for? We got hammered! You hate us!

And I could go on and on. And that's just sports. You sure you want to be in this business?

Do people call the newsside to complain that they cost their kid an academic scholarship because they didn't write about the science fair or spelling bee or SAT results?

Nah, none of that shit builds character and predicts future success quite like the ability to hit a high school fastball.
