Just got finished putting our Prep Football Preview issue together today. It was OK. As usual, my procastination through the summer cost me the chance to add some neat stuff to it.

Anyways, just wondering everyone's favorite "stock" quotes that they get from prep football coaches this time each year. Some of my favorites that I find in my notes every August:

    • "I really think we're going to have more depth than last year." (And last year, they were supposed to have more depth than the year before, etc. Following this progression, Small School High should have 370 players in its program by now)

    • "We're getting close to where we can have a two-platoon system" (just like last year, and the year before that, etc.)

    • "We're real young this year"

    • "We've got good senior leadership"

    • "We've got the potential to play with anybody in the league" (though we've been 1-9 the last seven years)

    • "The kids worked hard in the weight room over the summer."

    • "(Player X) has the potential to be one of the best players to ever come through Podunk High School." (better than last year's greatest-ever player?)

    • "I'm as excited right now as I've been..."

    • "Last year, we were the best 2-8 team in the state" (as if that's something to be excited about)

    • My favorite from this year: "I just want to see if these jokers can do anything" (coach of the defending state champs, who graduated about 20 key guys)

    Your favorites?

"We have to stay healthy" (Really? You think so?)
"These guys have worked hard" (Doesn't everybody?)
    "Our chemistry is really good."
"We have to be able to run the ball"
"We want to be balanced offensively"
"We're trying to open things up a little."
"We're only concentrating on this Friday"

and the winner is, anything with the word football in front of it.
"We can be a good football team. He is a good football player. We have to fly to the football."

I've really enjoyed coaching this team. They might not be the most talented group of kids, but they're the most fun. They work hard and that makes them a pleasure to coach. They are the most close-knit group I've ever had.

We have some fine young men on our team, and it's a privilege to coach them.

this team has a chance to be special

I watched him walk down the stands to the field during our practice and I thought his heart was going to explode.
