    Soccer.

But, only the kind where fans are actually involved and there is something on the line. I too, love to sing and shout at these things. It just feels good.

In person? Baseball. Nothing makes me happier than sitting at a ballpark watching all the little games within the game.

Minor league baseball is probably the most "fun" experience because:

    a) the beer is cheaper (still overpriced, but not as outrageously as brew at MLB parks), as well as the tickets, parking and everything else associated with the experience.

    b) the crowd, usually, is a little thinned out.

    c) Nobody cares who wins. You can carry on conversations with your friends without having to worry about what inning is it, what's the score, who's on base, yadda yadda. You can pay casual attention to all that stuff as the game goes on, but nobody really CARES. No emotional investment in the game, therefore no anxiety. The Hometown Boys win the game, wow that's cool, if they lose, oh well, who cares.

Now, if you're looking for high-intensity excitement, of course, it's a whole different story.

Hockey. It's one of those sports that is almost unwatchable on TV, but amazing to see in person -- the speed, the physicality of the players -- all of that gets lost on TV.

And international soccer game is always great. There's so much energy and passion through the whole event. I've heard Nascar is really cool. I gotta check that out sometime. College sports are fun as well. Baseball is aight but I always feel like taking a nap around the 3-4 inning.

After covering several races from the infield or from the bleachers at short tracks, I had a surprisingly good time as a fan at a NASCAR race.

The denizens are fanatical about their driver but good-natured about it. It was also much easier to keep up with what was going on that I thought it would be.

Once took my 1 1/2 year old son to a college basketball tournament (first round of the NCAAs) and he sat through three games without squabbling. So that was pretty cool.

Baseball is probably tops for me because you can generally pick any day and have decent weather during the summer. Excellent point on the minor league games and their slightly less-than-highway-robbery beer prices. (There's also enough added entertainment to keep the kids amused.)

If you're not going to take the kids, I've enjoyed NASCAR races quite a bit. Instead of having fans of only two teams in the crowd, you have fans of dozens. (Well, maybe only about 10 or so.) People-watching is almost worth the price of admission and tailgating is a blast. Plus, the tracks where I've been have FREE parking and you can bring in your own beer. Where else can you get that?

If you're in it strictly for the action, you can't beat college basketball.

I'm just cheap, I guess. I don't drink around my kids, anyway, so when I take them to a ball game, I'm not drinking beer. And I make sure we all get a good meal before going to the ballpark so that I don't get ripped off buying overpriced food at the ballpark. Added to that, I'll pack sandwiches to have as a snack, if needed, during the game. All the money they're getting out of me is paying for the ticket and paying for parking (assuming there isn't another place to park for free.) I hear stories of money just flying out of wallets at games. Not me.

Here's one that's not for every taste, but it's an experience. The fights. Any level is the same experience. The Golden Gloves in Lowell can be as or more satisfactory than a championship night in Vegas (although EVERYONE in sports journalism should do one of those. One's enough). Boxing is evil and inescapably fascinating. It's not mankind at its best, but it might be mankind at its most.

PS: On their first date, my dad took my mom to the fights, springing for ringside tickets. She wore a nice white sweater. I think you can all guess what happened next. Some pug got popped in the schnozz, and mom's nice sweater got a hemoglobin dye job. All things considered, it's a miracle I came to be.

For me it's hockey. One of the most exciting sports to watch live. At any level.
Then CFL Football – without getting into an argument over talent levels, it is football at it's best. Wide open, fast, exciting. Great game overall. Plus it's cheap enough anyone can go and it's usually a good atmosphere.

That being said, I would love to sit ring side someday.

    1. Hockey. Best action and energy.
    2. Baseball. A singular pastoral ritual.
    3. Basketball. A good basketball game is a fine thing, indeed.

Football can be fun, but it really is better on TV.
