So in 1970, me and three other friends spent the summer going West in a VW bus we fitted out for camping. Went to Glacier, the Canadian Rockies, Vancouver, Vancouver Island, down the Oregon coast, refitted in Berkeley and down to LA to our friend who'd let us stay in Manhattan Beach. As we drove past Malibu on the PCH, there was Wilt, playing beach volleyball in a game with nothing but gorgeous women on the rest of both teams. For East Coast boys, it was like "Wow, this is Hollywood!"

Ah, he's the greatest. Remember when he was leading going to Sunday at The Players and sat down with Bob Costas, who asked if this was the first time he'd had a 54-hole lead. Goydos shook his head and deadpanned "but I've only been out here 16 years."

John Feinstein couldn't talk to Goydos enough for his books. Powder-dry sense of humor.
