Who is your favorite guitarist and your favorite guitar solo?

Mine is Eddie Van Halen, and Eruption is my favorite guitar solo.

    Steve Hackett
And give me "Spectral Mornings" - all of it is since it is an instrumental.

    Honorable mentions:
    "Every Day" - Steve Hackett
"Blood On the Rooftops" - Genesis (played by some guy already mentioned)
"Time" - Pink Floyd (David Gilmour)
"Between The Wheels" - Rush (Alex Lifeson)
"Chain Lightning" - Rush (Alex Lifeson)
"La Villa Strangiato" - Rush (Alex Lifeson)

Just saw Tommy Emmanuel. The guy is absolutely sick.

  7. David Gilmour, Comfortably Numb.

Nothing excessive, but elevates the tune to classic

Probably not his most technically difficult solo, but it hits me just right.

Wow ... tough, tough, tough to pick just one. Several great players/solos already mentioned.

I'll throw out a few more:

Electric division: Brian May, Queen, "The Prophet's Song."

Acoustic division: Pete Townshend, The Who, "Sunrise."

1980s metal division: Rudolf Schenker, Scorpions, "No One Like You." (hell, the solo's so tight, they start the song off with it! Then he expands upon it later)

I don't know if I have a favourite guitarist, but I think the coolest solo I've ever heard was by Danny Cedrone in "Rock Around the Clock."

He was a session musician who frequently worked with Bill Haley and the Comets, and he died a little more than two months after recording that song.
