Trey Beamon beat me to it by mentioning Neko Case. Amazing voice. I also like Eva Cassidy, who died way too young and who is not widely known.

Since this thread title is Favorite female vocalist, not best female vocalist, my top 10 (in no particular order) would probably be:

    - Tift Merritt
    - Aretha Frankiln
    - Ronnie Spector
    - Shelby Lynne
    - Allison Moorer
    - Lucinda Williams
    - Billie Holiday
    - Pat Benatar
    - Iris DeMent
    - Emmylou Harris

Can't believe no one has mentioned Alison Krauss yet. She might have the most beautiful voice of all time.

Here are a few others I really like:

    Dolly Parton
    Emmylou Harris
    Aretha Franklin
    Norah Jones
    kd lang
    Ella Fitzgerald
    Eartha Kitt
    Stevie Nicks
    Fiona Apple

And whoever they are, the background singers of Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky" and Led Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore" are phenomenal.

EDIT: Clare Torry and Sandy Denny, respectively.

Thanks to cranberry for reminding me but I do believe Sarah Brightman has one of the more powerful female voices I've ever heard.
