Hoover school board e-mail upsets football parents

Some Hoover High School parents were upset after football practice today over an e-mail from Hoover school board Vice President Suzy Baker.

Earlier today, Baker sent an e-mail response to Kent Frost, a Hoover High football player who gave board members a letter signed by 65 football players in support of head coach Rush Propst.

In her response, Baker said she is "ashamed that adults would even put kids in a position to sign a letter like this" and asks: "What in the world were you thinking?"

The letter signed by players said it would be unfair to remove Propst as coach and that it's the team's opinion that Propst has been "a strong leader, disciplinarian, and positive influence in our lives."

Baker said tonight she thought she was responding to a parent of a football player, but she stands by her comments.

She said, in the e-mail, that the standard for what is and is not acceptable starts with the coach and asked which parents would accept their son behaving the way Propst has.

Baker also asked why, with the advantage of 1,000 more students than another school in the area and a consistent number of senior move-in starters, "cheating on grades, playing ineligible players and spying still had to occur?"

"My heart breaks for these kids," Baker wrote in her e-mail. "They did not create this situation and they should be furious with those adults who have done this."

An investigative report into academics and athletics at Hoover High said that some football players received preferential academic treatment. The report also cited a need for tighter controls of finances for Hoover football camps and broadcasts, noted that Propst has been providing income for a second family and said accusations that Propst had an affair with a former assistant principal were "hardly baseless."

Steve Frost, the parent of the football player who wrote the letter, said Baker was misguided and, as a parent at rival Spain Park High School, was being partisan.

Hoover must forfeit games due to ineligible player

The Alabama High School Athletic Association ruled wide receiver Tristan Purifoy ineligible on Tuesday, costing Hoover High School the forfeiture of all victories in which Purifoy played.

Hoover must also pay a $2,000 fine and will be placed on probation for three years, according to A.W. Bolt, a Hoover school board member. Bolt said the AHSAA ruled that further action could be taken if other situations occur.

Bolt said he was told the player was ruled ineligible for two reasons -- improper participation at Hoover before he enrolled, and not changing his residency in accordance with AHSAA rules.

Purifoy transferred from Hanceville High, a 3A football program, last summer. Football coach Rush Propst has previously said the AHSAA had questions regarding who holds custody of Purifoy -- his mother or his father.

The AHSAA sought from Hoover last week Purifoy's official withdrawal date from Hanceville, his enrollment date at Hoover, the family's current and past residences, the entire court file for his custody, and the date when Purifoy began working out with Hoover.

It is not clear how many victories Hoover will have to forfeit. The Birmingham News has previously reported that Purifoy played in every game this season except a 20-12 win over Minor on Oct. 5.

The penalties do not ban Hoover from the state playoffs this season, if they are eligible despite the forfeited victories.

And those look real, and spectacular. Some women in their 40s in Bama know how to take care of themselves. I hope the vice-principal Propst was banging was similar -- just something for his troubles, if you know what I mean.

I think these players believe Propst has been "a positive influence on their lives" because he's been able to give them excellent tips in how to score babes.

The vice principal was a redhead and the ex-wife of an area coach.

The school board member with the... ummm... necklace is the wife of a BIGTIME area developer... so am sure she either takes care of herself or can afford to have someone do it for her.
