Boom is correct here. Dressing casually, I prefer a brown a cordovan, or sometimes even suede shoe with black slacks or jeans. Match your socks to your pants, of course.

If you're wearing a black suit, though, break out the black shoes. And if you're a grown-up those shoes should have leather soles. I can't believe the people how many people ruin a perfectly good suit with rubber-soled shoes or those dreadful sneaker-shoe hybrids. I don't care if they're Cole-Haans with Nike technology. They're still wrong with a suit.

    That is my fear.

But I'm also quite scared with what I'm about to say ... boom is right.

    Good Christ, that hurt.

With dress pants/shoes, socks should match the trousers, not the shoes.

Except for one suit (which I haven't worn since my wedding), I don't have any black clothes. Two reasons, both personal, not a rule that I know of. First, it gives off that wannabe-hipster uniform aura that, to me, looks pathetic. Second, unless you're going to dry clean it (expensive, inconvenient), it's going to start to fade after not many washings, so you're not talking a long, useful lifespan.

I try to make sure my codpiece matches my shoes on most days.

My fashion sense is nil, but I do know that JFK came down hard on this issue:

See, I'd go with cordovan with a navy blue suit unless it was a very formal setting.
