Everyday phrases/idioms with racial overrtones?

    that's a current interpretation. it was cheap seating, not related to race necessarily.
    the current assumption is that because most black audience members were in the cheap seats, it's racial, but that is not the origin

    Was going to mention that one, but didn't want to offend. Though I guess that's part of the danger of the thread. The more sanitized(?) version: jury-rigged.

    "Jury-rigged" is a much older term, harkens back to naval lingo. Original meaning was makeshift repairs to the ship's mast and sailing rig, usually after damage suffered in battle.
