ESPN's double standard

Can there be a double standard when ESPN has no standards to start with?

Eh, that's just shifting the debate. ESPN has them, all right. It just wants this to go away.

Miller was arrested for urinating in public at a nightclub. He also faced a bogus drug charge because the police found a toothpick in in pack of cigarettes. The drug "paraphernalia" charge was dropped.

Hey, as long as ESPN doesn't do a multi-part series on pool safety, I'll be okay.
    Good lord that was awful.

I didn't even now who the chickie was until she made her comments and a thread popped up here. Still don't care. Roasts, by their nature, are supposed to be offensive.

Imus, by his nature, is supposed to be offensive.

If "chickie" had said f--- Northwestern, f--- the Jets, and finally f--- Jews," what do you think the reaction would have been?

"Hate Speech" -- hate speech's ass.
I'm tired of hearing that neo politically correct term. She made "drunk fool of one's self speech."

If you are in line at the store and tell someone "Get out of my way (insert derogatory name)" - then that's hate speech. If you make an ass out of yourself, then that's what it is, making an ass out of yourself. It doesn't mean you've got some hidden hate or agenda.

Why in this day and age do people have to be fired/punished/etc. because they fucked up? That's all Jacobson did. That's all Tilghman did. They fucked up. They said something they thought was cute or funny that wasn't.

They've both taken their lumps. They've admitted they've fucked up. MOVE ON PEOPLE.

Depends on which part of the parallel SportsJournalists.com universe you are logged in to.

There's the underpaid-and-whining-about-the-price-of-gas universe . . . and there's the the HDTV-Vegas, baby!-Ruth's Chris universe . . . the universe where "Fuck Jesus" is fine and dandy ("It's a roast, people!") and the universe where "Fuck Jews" or "Fuck fags" would demand termination.

Hard to keep track, since the switch from one to another is pretty seamless.

And then there is the incoherent post universe, which BTE just visited.

Cripes. It was a roast. Traditionally, roasts are supposed to be off-color and tasteless.

If she went on the air and said, "Fuck Charlie Weis, fuck Notre Dame and fuck Jesus!" then she should lose her job. But she didn't.

Thank you. Why is this so hard to understand? It's like arresting Warren Sapp for sacking a QB ... he's supposed to hit people because it's a fucking football game. Roasts are supposed to be offensive.

ESPN just had no business in the roasting biz, and you can bet they won't try it again anytime soon. They probably thought it was a "roast" as in making fun of dorky Mike and dumb-jock Mike, har-dee-har-har. The memo didn't get to everyone, and when the Dean Martin-style roast came out -- at their corporate-sponsored event in a presumably respectable resort-casino -- they thought they were in big trouble. So an overserved speaker going over the line got reprimanded.
