ESPN Names New Poker Writer

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Evil Bastard (aka Chris_L), Apr 11, 2007.

  1. Hah - for a guy telling someone else to grow up - you sure do have thin skin. Maybe when you are a man - you will be able to handle rough and tumble of the Internets.

And yes it is a public thread but the general idea of the separate boards is to have journalism subjects here, sports and news on that board and the inane crap on the anything goes board. I guess I shouldn't fault you if you can't tell the difference.

    Exactly.

And the people who don't like a particular beat should be glad there are specialists out there so they don't have to mess with it.

    Let me help you out.
One of these days, you may have seen enough to figure this out on your own.
    ESPN hires a poker writer.
ESPN has approximately 40 hours of poker programming daily. I'm being facetious, but not by much.
This isn't a "big hire" or the "next big wave" or even frozen yogurt shops on every corner...
It's called "synergy." Plain and simple.

    What???? ESPN and synergy???? Naw!!

Seriously though, I don't think you can fault a guy for turning a blog into a good paying job. You can fault ESPN, etc., whoever you want for the ridiculousness of having a poker beat writer, but I have a hard time criticising this guy for capitalizing on an opportunity. If this poker fad goes the way of pogs and yo yos, I'm sure he'll find another way to feed himself. But for the time being: nice work, Dr.

I'm not faulting anyone. We need more jobs, not less.
But, this isn't the genesis of a national beat.

    Let's see:

    - The world awaits paternity results for Anna Nicole Smith's baby

    - ESPN is hiring poker writers. Seriously.

Well, that sounds like two of the seven seals. What's next, the locust swarm?

And don't they already have a poker writer in Simmons? Ok, ok. I know, the guy knows about as much about gambling as nuns know about brothels.

So what's the first story going to be? What Jen Tilly was thinking when she won "Celebrity Poker Tournament 'X'?"

    :)

  7. Let me help you out.
Pauly McGrupp is perhaps the best poker writer going.
His style combines the poker knowledge of the late Andy Glazer with the irreverence of Charles Bukowski
To people who follow poker - this is a "big hire"
You obviously don't follow poker but still feel compelled to comment.
It's called "acting like a self-important boob". Plain and simple

I've always been a huge fan of McGrupp, Glazer and Bukowski.

BRISTOL, Conn. -- ESPN announced today that it has hired Dick Hertz to be its new "Monopoly" writer.
Hertz, 19, a college student, said he was thrilled to join the Worldwide Leader.
"I can't wait to cover the action on Park Place and Baltic Avenue," Hertz said.
ESPN will debut coverage of the national Monopoly Championship in June, and said it is exploring shows featuring Scrabble, Go Fish, and War.

  10. I admit it, I've watched poker on ESPN. Not a lot, but I think it can be entertaining. That said, there's no way I'm ever going to read about poker.
