End of the Internet

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Pete Incaviglia, Jan 29, 2009.

  1. So maybe newspapers should start doing it right or not doing it at all?

  2. So who, besides the porn guys and eBay, sells anything on the Internet?

Our online revenue was up 38% in 2008, with an operating profit of greater than 50%. Are we robbing Peter to pay Paul? Sure, to an extent. But every single day I visit clients ranging from realtors to hospitals to major theme parks to boutique wine shops who are shifting their marketing strategy and their advertising dollars from print to online. It's the height of wishful thinking to believe that if we simply didn't have a website, those clients would shrug and continue to advertise in print, as if other websites didn't exist. That's especially true for the realtors and tourism-related clients who love the fact that nearly 60% of our online visitors are from outside our DMA.

    Finally, some sanity.
The Internet is NOT a successful business model people.
Newspapers would be smart to scrap it completely right now. Kill it.
Get your salespeople off their ass to sell print ads. Expand the sports sections. Make people want to buy them again.
Oh wait ... publishers are still so afraid of newsprint costs and ink costs, their selfish interests to make budget continue to push this fraud called the Internet. newspaper websites are not profitable, people. The business model does not work.
OK call me a zealot. I happen to be fucking right.

Yes it is. Explain to me why in the world newspapers have gone online? I'll tell you why. A few successful "consultants" sold publishers on this bill of goods. It is a crappy business model that is in the process of destroying the business. When Gannett goes all online (they'll be the first to do so) staffs will be cut in half, maybe more, probably more. Profits will be abysmal. You prove to me the internet is the way to go big guy. Try it.

Been through this before. Your ranting does not move me.

They tell me to move left, I'll move left. With a smile. And probably be standing when you're out of the business griping about something else.

    That is all.

  9. Here's a start -- if you go online, you can reach more readers at a much lower price.
The trick is to get the advertisers to foot the bill.
You do that and you have a great business model.

Are you kidding me? Please tell me you are a 10 a.m. meeting person. That is the only reason for your position. You are that much of a sellout? You move left when told? You'd probably agree to what they are doing in South Bend. I have too much self respect to write down what I do all fucking day.

Every newspaper editor I have met loves to extoll the virtues of the internet. But very few want to expend the resources it takes to have a decent site. Well, you get what you pay for.

Are TV station or radio station web sites doing any better? The only thing a web site can really do (other than give away the entire darn product) is to PROMOTE whatever you are selling.

For instance, put the headlines on the web site, then urge people to buy the paper to read the actual story.
