The main reason to do it now?

You'll scoop all the folks that think it ends next year.

    Whoever files first, wins.

There's no 1994 World Series champion, either.

Doesn't mean you have to screw everything up to come up with 10 World Series champions for that decade. There were nine, because one was vacated.

Just like "0 A.D." is vacated from the first decade, which contains only nine years (1-9)

Of all the lists and bogusness of end of year, end of decade filler - would have really liked to have seen a "The Aughts - Where Are They Now" feature doing updates on the people from throughout the decade. Baghdad Bob, the guy who said "Thank You Mr. Bush!" when the Sadaam statue came down, the firefighter who stood with Bush at Ground Zero, the "eyeball guy" during the Florida recount, Katherine Harris, Victor Conte, the various soldiers who grabbed our attention (the guy running with the kid, the grimy faced GI with the cigarette, Jessica Lynch), the coalminers who were rescued in WV, might have been PA; the various defendants of the various big court cases; various reality show contestants.
Anyway - kind of creepy that we're just a year and a half away from a decade of war.
We spent almost as long trying to figure out what to call this crappy decade.

Flawed logic. There were 10 years to have an annual World Series and a choice was made not to play one. It does not mean 1994 did not exist. You can't "choose" for a year not to happen. And a decade, by definition, is 10 years. So the first 10 years were years 1-10. Period. No way to justify it any other way.

Now, there are ways around that fact. Like "a look back at the best of the 80s" as opposed to saying "a look back at the best of the decade" at the end of 1989... Not that people didn't say "end of the decade" in 1989, but it gives an out to those who wanted to be accurate AND group years the way they are commonly grouped. In this case, however, it's a little awkward coming up with a title. You could say the "best of the '00s," but that might confuse folks.

There ya go. A decade is any 10-year period you choose. As long as you make it clear somewhere that by "the decade" you mean 2000-09, you are OK.

FWIW - SI.Com has a great look back at the 2000s "one-hit wonders", biggest upsets, best teams, best new stadiums etc. I'd still prefer Rushin's year-end roundup that he used to do, but it will do.
