Disappointed? I mean, what are you going to talk about now?

I'm not disappointed. She's going to be confirmed.

If anything, it will spare the embarrassment of seeing some right wingers freak out about a potential gay Justice.

I've said repeatedly, that her sexuality isn't an issue to me.

But, as the politico article mentions:

So, I don't think it's out of line to discuss. Unless you think that only gays are allowed to speculate about who's gay.

    This was out there.

There's no reason it should be off the table. There's nothing wrong with being gay.

But, if you're in a relationship, I want to know with who. It will tell me a lot about you and it may reveal potential conflicts of interest.

People were recently saying that maybe Thomas would have to recuse himself from potential cases because of his wife's political activities.

Well, if that's the case, shouldn't we know about the spouses/partners of each Justice so that potential conflicts can be evaluated?

Heh. For someone who doesn't care, he sure does seem to devote a lot of words and posts to the issue.

    For example:

Not that he cares, though. You know, whatever.

Let me try again. I care who you choose to be in a relationship with because of what it says about you.

I don't care what the gender of the person you choose to be with is.

It wasn't that she was or was not gay. It was that she reportedly has/had a partner. That (alleged) person was being ignored in all of this.

    That's what was bothering me.

If she's single -- gay or straight -- that concern goes away.

As far as I'm concerned, they could have just said she's single.

The long New York Times profile didn't even say that.

Sotomayor & Miers (Souter too) were described as single. It's normal to report that. The Times didn't.

I found that to be odd. Didn't you?

Yes, it did. The takeout in Tuesday's paper mentioned that she "never married."

I think Politico's piece was good. I particularly thought the quote from the friend that all the mainstream reporters were trying to tiptoe around the question was illuminating. The NYT takeout was outstanding and I learned a lot about her, but the details about the roommates and their social life, particularly about intimidating men as "smart girls," was interesting.

    I don't think that's the same thing.

I've never been married, but I think my live-in girlfriend would be pretty pissed if I considered myself single.

She's not into sports at all.

    It's painful.

I try to talk to her about baseball & she tries to talk to me about makeup and shoes.

I think we each need more friends.
