Edmonds belongs to the Earl Averill family of center fielders; guys who clearly aren't Willie Mays or Joe DiMaggio or Ken Griffey but the next level. They can be All-Stars, MVPs and franchise players, just not quite immortal. They hit for power, but not 50-HR power. They hit for average, but generally aren't .340 hitters. These are generally outstanding players but usually lack the typical markers of Hall of Famers: big round numbers (like 500 homers or 3,000 hits), big records or massive adulation (they're generally underrated players).

That said, some of them make the Hall of Fame, like Averill and Larry Doby, but there's also Bobby Murcer, Fred Lynn, Reggie Smith. Bernie Williams is in the family, and maybe he'll get in. Others in this class of player: Dale Murphy, Rick Monday, Andy Van Slyke...if you go back far enough, maybe Ginger Beaumont, Bill Lange and Charley Jones.

I don't think he makes it.

I've got to wonder what the relationship will be between Carlos Zambrano and Edmonds. He had quite a confrontation with Michael Barrett last year and Barrett was soon sent on his way. He's got a history, and not a good one, with Edmonds. It is documented in this story. Will Carlos forgive him and move on? When asked about the acquisition, he had no comment.

Best part about the deal ... he'll probably start against the Padres today in the series finale and light 'em up.
