FiveThirtyEight.com is currently seeking a General Editor to assist with the development, writing, and oversight of our sports vertical. This is a position for an established journalist that requires experience at a prominent print or digital media outlet, extensive knowledge of the sports world, experience working with data and developing and writing content for a broad audience based on the demands of the news cycle, and outstanding interoffice and communication skills.

ESPN, Inc., The Worldwide Leader in Sports, is the leading multinational, multimedia sports entertainment company featuring the broadest portfolio of multimedia sports assets with over 50 business entities. Headquartered in Bristol, Connecticut, ESPN is 80% owned by ABC, Inc. (a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company), and 20% by the Hearst Corporation.

ESPN was founded by Bill Rasmussen and launched on September 7, 1979. Now with over 6,500 employees, each year ESPN televises more than 5,100 live and/or original hours of sports programming. The company’s mission is to serve sports fans. Anytime. Anywhere.
Responsibilities • The General Editor will write at least 2,000 words each week between longer data-driven sports features and blog posts.
    • The General Editor will be required to generate their own story ideas as well as work with the managing editor and feature editors on more collaborative pieces. The job will also entail working with FiveThirtyEight’s interactive news team on longer-term projects.
    • The job is based in LA, and will require a significant office presence. Hours will be variable depending on the demands of the news cycle, and will sometimes require night and weekend work.
Basic Qualifications • The individual in this position must be fluent in the FiveThirtyEight voice and skilled in idea generation within the sports vertical.
    • A strong understanding of mathematics/statistics is also required, and candidates must have a demonstrated aptitude in conducting original statistical analysis on sports-related subjects.
    • Candidates must be able to demonstrate they are gifted in editorial speed and judgment.
    • Candidates should have the demonstrated ability to write and think capably about several different sports: in particular, baseball, basketball, and football (perhaps along with others).
    • The job requires a self-starter who is capable of managing a heavy workload and who has excellent time management skills. Reliability, creativity, and work ethic are a must.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience editing, writing and/or conducting sports-related data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications • “Traditional” reporting skills (e.g. interviewing and tracking down source documents) are something we view very positively. We are intrigued by candidates who can combine traditional reporting with critical, empirical analysis.
    • Experience in managing or editing writers is a positive.
    • Programming skills, database skills, and familiarity with statistical software packages are clear positives.
    • So is the demonstrated ability to produce high-quality charts, graphics, and interactive features.
    • Experience in communicating via television, video and radio is a plus.
    Required Education • Bachelor’s degree.
