The guests are the reason that the "what-about-rap? diversion is just that. The guests are what put Imus in the mainstream of the American power elite. The guests were why he worked for a major mainstream news operation. He deserved to be fired because of what he said.

This absolutely should NOT have been a fireable offense with a pristine file, until the sponsors weighed in with withdrawals.

Then you fire him and admit that it was purely because of the sponsor reaction.... not the fucking lies this chucklehead threw in Olbermann's milk saucer to be lapped up as it was.

Olbermann needs to get outside and watch David Gregory every once in a while.

That said, I also want to defend Steve Capus a bit on this thread. Unlike most empty corporate suits, Capus really does have a soul. He may have sold it for awhile in deference to Imus, but better late than never in terms of recovering it. I applaud him for actually SEEKING OUT the opinions of NBC employees over the past week. And having sat in many meetings with Steve in the past, I completely believe him when he says those opinions played no small part in Imus' ouster from MSNBC.

As someone I worked with at NBC said to me this morning about Steve Capus..."he's the only nice one."

It was actually Erik Sorenson who hired Savage. When I knew Capus, he was exec producer of Nightly News. He didn't take over the entire division until 2005. (I left in 2002.)

Yeah, OK, I know Capus and plenty of the people at NBC News, but I'll let you be the one to tell me about his character and how it all went down, boss.

The suspension was announced before the advertisers pulled out, FYI. There's no reason not to be deliberate after announcing the suspension. It bought time to make a final decision.

The only beef I would have is in making the suspension effective beginning next week. It should have been immediate.
