    Learning to drive stick is essential if you ever want to rent a car overseas.

    Any European or Caribbean rental I have had was manual.

    Before I moved, I had to sell my old 4Runner (which pre-dated the term "SUV" and was essentially a Tacoma).

    When I return to the States, I rue the fact I'll probably have to buy an automatic. I hate the idea, but it doesn't seem many cars come with standard transmissions, and I don't think any of the hybrids do.
