Sailor hats and leather pants, and there can be no wiggle room there.

If there is wiggle room in the leather pants, you ain't wearin 'em right.

If an employer says, "We wear shirts and ties at this level," I'll abide by that. I have and I do. But I'm not going to a magazine for my fashion dos and don'ts. That was my point.

And I actually like wearing shirts and ties -- depending on the tasks that day, of course.

I don't, either. I'm immune to trendiness. Point is, people can't legitimately say flip-flops are considered stylish by people who care about clothes. They don't see it as cool, they see it as slob. Akin to man in stained wifebeater undershirt with beer gut perusing the Wal-Mart pork rinds selection. No law against it, but it's gross.

Good point. You want to walk like Frankenstein.

Just to be clear, I wasn't buying them, I was just window shopping.

Got it. I'm continuously out of style, and I've been OK with that since I began dressing myself at 19. I've developed my own style. Some people dig it, and others don't. But I'm never uncomfortable, even in "proper" work clothes. The shirt matches the tie and the hat matches the shirt (more or less). Those are my only rules.

Maybe they were just trying to keep you out of trouble?
