I'm the sports editor at this place. There's some desk work during the season when the local team, the Jackson Generals, is on the road and the position becomes a GA/desk work position in the offseason from September to late March.

Anyone interested can email me at bjshields@jacksonsun.com.

And what does "desk work" entail, exactly, in a universe where your pages are handled by a Gannett Design Center?

    Clerk work and proofreading?

The term "desk work" for us means getting local copy edited and sent to our design studio in Nashville and essentially acting as copy editor in charge of the budget and making sure the Web site is updated. The position is one night of this kind of work every 10 days during the season because the team is home for five games then is on the road for five days with the exception of one 10-game home stand and one 10-game road trip a season.

Then when the season ends, the position will become two or three nights of this while acting as a GA writer in conjunction with our high school and local college beats.

I'll vouch for both of these. What I vouch, exactly, is another matter ...

Good rundown. I asked only to help clarify, as "desk work" means 99 different things in 100 random shops.

That was actually a pretty common question I got from people responding through email, so it's probably a good thing to put on here.

    The more you know ...
