    In the
In the slums of Los Angeles? Now, THAT's an oxymoron!

This is a story about (Donald Sterling), make no mistake, but also about generational language, and race, and politics. How big does this get? Is there any telling?

Sterling and the Clippers organization tell TMZ Sports, "We have heard the tape on TMZ. We do not know if it is legitimate or it has been altered."

The statement goes on ... We do know that the woman on the tape -- who we believe released it to TMZ -- is the defendant in a lawsuit brought by the Sterling family, alleging that she embezzled more than $1.8 million, who told Mr. Sterling that she would 'get even.'"

And the statement goes on, "Mr. Sterling is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings. It is the antithesis of who he is, what he believes and how he has lived his life."

And there's this: "He feels terrible that such sentiments are being attributed to him and apologizes to anyone who might have been hurt by them."

So, he's not saying it is a fake, but he's raising the possibility.

He's not denying the comments, just saying they are not consistent with his beliefs.

He's not admitting he said it all, but he's apologizing to those hurt by it.

His advisers might want to pick a message and go with it.

Just curious ... what are some of you going to say if it should be proven that the voice on tape is not Sterling's?

    Nothing: 91.8%

Stubbornly maintain that it was still him: 6.4%

    Admit they reacted hastily: 1%

Be disappointed beyond words: .8% (Mark)

If it's not him, I'll be condemning the person who faked it.

I find that possibility extremely unlikely given that his statement does not include a strong denial.

Did anyone here mention that the NBA has long approved business partnerships with execrable rappers such as Drake and former Nets part-owner Jay-Z who continue to make a fortune with vile misogynistic and racist lyrics?

    Just checking!

The NBA must now give Sterling two choices: 1) Admit his is the voice on the TMZ recording; 2) Submit to some sort of forensic analysis that will try to determine if the voice on the TMZ tape is his.
And, no, the league doesn't have to abide by the same standards as a prosecutor. Anything beyond a 50 percent probability of match should be enough.
And then, the league has to try to evict him from the ownership club. This, of course, may not be easy. We're talking about a guy who agreed to pay $3 million or so to settle a complaint alleging discriminatory leasing practices. That's pretty close to an admission of guilt. And still he didn't get evicted from the owners club.

The term "1st Annual" is not the worst thing about that invitation.
