Do you know your local judge?

I know OF him. That's the way I'd like to keep it.

I know my local judge pretty well. I wrote stories when he was a defence lawyer and I wrote about when he was named to the bench. I've also covered his children playing hockey and see him at the rink and other social functions.

I guess one funny story would be when I got a speeding ticket and the officer put the wrong date on it, so I got some paralegals to fight the charge (and I didn't need to attend). Anyway, I had two reporters in court the same day covering some high-profile trial.

I get a call from my reporters, saying the judge actually turned straight to them in court and said "Tell the boss he's off the hook." A fun moment — though I might add that legally, it was the correct decision.
