Discussion in 'Journalism Jobs' started by boundforboston, Jun 25, 2013.

  1. Description:

The Gazette and KCRG-TV9, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are seeking a versatile and highly motivated digital sports editor. This position is responsible for editing, packaging, publishing and maintaining sports content for the state’s second largest newspaper and market-leading television station in Eastern Iowa. The position is also responsible for actively participating in social media and helping to promote content on our Web sites and engaging the local sports community. This person is also responsible for regularly editing video for use online and production of several podcasts.

You should be comfortable editing and curating/enriching content from a variety of sources: blogs, wire services, freelancers, community contributors, etc. You should be ready to occasionally jump in and do original reporting yourself.

Our ideal candidate is comfortable using metrics tools, such as Google Analytics, to assist in decision making. You also understand sports, both on and off the field. The ideal candidate is regularly thinking of how to execute new ideas online which grow our brands and promote digital interaction.

This is a fast-paced position in a newsroom that thinks big. Our sports team regularly covers Big Ten and Big 12 NCAA sports, a robust high school sports scene, and a variety of other topics including racing and outdoors. Our sports team goes far beyond game coverage. The sports team hosts an array of podcasts, daily video blogs, broadcasting a weekly live television show, and broadcasts live prep, collegiate and minor league sports on KCRG 9.2.

As many sporting events happen on nights and weekends, you should expect to work a schedule that includes nights and weekends. You also need to be able to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously, be comfortable working as part of a team and work well under tight deadlines.

    Our organization:

Our news operation is converged and combines digital, print and broadcast for The Gazette, TheGazette.com, KCRG-TV9 , kcrg.com, as well as several niche sites. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is employee-owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news outlets. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have bureaus in Des Moines and Iowa City. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.

    Qualifications & Requirements:

I was going to personally post this position and I'm glad someone beat me to it!

The Digitial Sports Editor (formerly known as our Online Sports Editor) will report to the Digital Team, but reside in the Sports Department and be right in the middle of our sports coverage and reporting. Besides overseeing our web sites, they also will have opportunities to work with others on the staff for multimedia packages, webcasts and podcasts. If you want a couple examples of the multimedia packages, here are two links:
