Did you hear what Howard Stern said today?

Seems like it. I was going to get Sirius when Stern switched, but when they told me all the stuff I had to do to hook it up in my apartment, it didn't seem worth it.

That's not entirely true. Sirius/XM has 20 million people paying for radio, which is amazing when you think about it. Pretty incredible that you can't make money off that. But they screwed up so much financially getting here, there's just no righting the ship.

I got Sirius for Christmas and setting it up in my apartment entailed nothing more than putting the player on a table and pointing the antenna out the window to pick up the signal.

Putting it in my car has been a bit more complicated since Best Buy sucks ass, but overall it's pretty simple.

Thanks to my brothers, my first year of Sirius will be free. But I won't have a problem paying what will equate to about 25 cents a day for it. Between Stern, the Grateful Dead channel and some of the jazz channels, it's well worth it.

I'm sad. I had Sirius in my rental car this weekend and found four actual stations I enjoyed. I was considering ponying up for it.

    Oh well.

Oh sure. Convenient. "I was going to buy it but it looks like it's going under so oh well..."

A lot of subscribers I know get it for two reasons: 1. Sports broadcasts; 2. No commercials.

First, I question the figures. Does that include people who get a free trial if it's installed in the car they buy? Does that include people who sign up for an almost-free trial run, then cancel when the real bill comes due?

Stern has no presence outside of satellite, therefore can't pick up any casual listeners.

He's preaching to the choir, delighting the people who love it when he talks dirty to strippers.

For a guy who once bragged he was king of all media, he's now in a niche forum that relatively few hear and he's pimping for Bubba the Love Sponge.

He made a pile of money (good for him) but he lost his relevance.

I pay $5/mth and can hear any MLB radio broadcast live on my phone. I plug in the charger at work, put on my headphones and I'm good to go for almost all of my entire shift. No blackouts, even for the three local teams in my area.

I have liked XM the times I've had it (on planes, rental cars, etc.), but I don't have any clue what it takes to install it or how much it costs. Just don't see a need for satellite radio yet.

The thing that killed Sirius and XM was the Ipod. Why would I want to pay someone 10 bucks a month, plus the trouble of purchasing and installing a receiver and antenna, when I can listen to the music I want to listen to anytime? It's all about control. 120 bucks a year will buy you the equivalent of 10 CDs on Itunes. I'd rather spend my money there.

And I just don't see myself using the sports broadcast part of satellite radio. With streaming audio on the internet, I don't see the point.

Been listening to Stern since I was 15. He is brilliant. I'm in the car a lot and long road trips fly by when I have Howard on.

He's not for everyone, but he's still at the top of his game.

Howard and Leno hate each other and have for the last five years or so.
