No. I'm sure the reporters cultivated him as a source in the past. This is why you cultivate sources. So when the time comes, they'll tip you off and all you have to do is be there to answer the phone.

No, but you should be wary about everyone's motivations for giving you information, especially anonymously.

It's not irresponsible to speculate in this case. In some cases the information might be a lot more sensitive, and it could be irresponsible then.
