what's an agate editor? just a fancy title for an agate clerk?

Actually, Riddick, I always thought it was the CORRECT title for somebody who does agate for a sports section, given all the work those people do with little thanks or recognition. Those are backbone positions in getting the newspaper out every day. It seems like a number of papers are eliminating spots there, and unless they're going to change the way they do business -- no agate page, no taking prep results by phone (in fact, letting the phone just ring without answering), etc. -- they're about to find out just how important those people really are.

It's like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Try to stay afloat a bit longer but the mother fucker is still going down.

Maybe if Albom's huge salary is cut they'll save some money. Props and cheers to John Paul Morisi for leaving the Tigers beat for FoxSports.com.

They've already changed. All the preps stuff and box scores are online now. There's not even a paper left. It blows.

Understood, Mustang, but with regard to preps: Somebody has to take and process that information, right? In paper or online, it still has to be dealt with.

True, but not as many people. There's like a quarter page for preps some days with a refer to the web. It sucks. Less than five years ago they had an entire Thursday prep section called preps extra. It was awesome.

Anyone know when the JOA between Gannett and MNG in Detroit runs out?
Gotta be headed for a one-newspaper town whenever that is.

A little info: The JOA was renegotiated when Gannett bought the Free Press a few years ago. It had been a 100-year JOA but I'm betting it's not now. Also, Gannett in control like 95-5 now. In addition to the cuts on that list, five management, non-Guild covered employees got the ax today and were told to be gone by the end of this week: a librarian, the supervisor for all the copy desks, an assistant metro editor, the Web's audience editor and an administrative assistant.

At the meeting, people were told that despite the new system, they can't sell an ad in Detroit because of the economy and basically they're not making money. Apparently, it's not the new system but the economy here. And they're worried because of the car dealers that may go kaput if the auto situation gets any worse (i.e. bankruptcy).

And yes, if Mitch really wanted to give to charity, he should halve his salary and save a few jobs.

-I think it is a 100 year JOA from the day Gannett took over.
-It's going to get worse then, because GM is filing for bankruptcy in about 8 days.
