    Definitely sounds like ulterior motives.
Raising the price won't solve the problems.

I see a lame subscription pitch forming in some house-ad creator's head right now:

"Subscribe to the Free Press and save EVEN MORE off the news stand price!"

Of course, maybe they're jacking up subscription rates, too. :(

This HAD to have been the plan all along.

I thought they had the same entrances.

On the one hand, yes, this is absolutely true.

But the prices should've gone up to proper levels ten years ago, or five years ago, when the product was still fairly robust. Now, we have gotten to a case where they're jacking up the price of an inferior product.

Detroit also seems like the worst market imagineable to try something like this in.

I'd not buy that for a dollar.

Sure, some people are going to stop buying it, but I doubt half the people that already buy it will stop buying it because of the price increase. If I'm right, they're going to make more money.

Sure, that's simple math. But rack circ going down a bunch means not being able to charge as much for ads

I just don't get the logic in cutting the size of your product, then charging double for it. Unless the plan is REALLY to scare people away to the point of bankruptcy.

I thought this might be interesting.. the sight of one of the circulation people out wrenching new subscribers.

Everybody has already stopped buying it. They stopped when they canceled home delivery.

People realized if they could go without the paper for one day, they could go without it every day.
