The Detroit Free Press Sports desk needs a full-time Web producer. We need somebody whose primary job will be to run the Sports component of the Free Press Web site on the overnight shift. We need somebody who also will be able to perform all the duties of other copy editors when needed.

The key is versatility. This job will require a vast array of skills. For instance, for the Web:

    1) Follow the daily vision of the site as outlined by assistant sports editor Mark Francescutti, the department's Web leader, and the Web team.

    2) Update the Sports content on the site throughout a shift. That means handling the design, editing stories, posting stories, writing stories, deciding the play of stories, writing blogs, pursuing stories, working with assistant sports editors and doing anything else that expands —and improves— the content on the site.

    3) Handle the rollover of the site from print product to online product in the middle of the night. Add in Web extras then, too, of course.

    4) Produce a daily Web budget and coordinate story play with the Web team for the overnight rollover.

    5) Speed, speed, speed. Without mistakes. Without a safety net.

    And there are more skills:
    1) We need someone ready to tackle some of the toughest copy deadlines in the Eastern Time Zone.

    2) We're looking for someone with good judgment, grammatical precision and a flair for headlines; someone with energy, curiosity and an appreciation for sports; someone ready to take chances, embracing our mission of “One Dumb Thing a Day;” someone who understands the importance of a 24/7 Internet presence; and someone excited that we're again a player in the Sunday sports section game.

    3) We're looking for someone who wants to be part of a winning team, dedicated to producing a sports section with impact, excitement and information.

Experience isn't (that) important, only talent. We're willing to take informed risks. The deadlines never stop. Nothing beats working weekends and holidays, of course. The likely hours will be 8:30 p.m. to 4:30ish a.m., depending on big sporting events.

Interested? Contact Gene Myers at 313-222-6736 or gmyers@freepress.com —and do so ASAP. Or Mark Francescutti at 313-222-6727 or mfrancescutti@freepress.com.

What kind of discerning viewership are you getting between 1 and 4:30 a.m. that warrants this person working at 90 mph that whole time. This looks like a position with burnout written all over it----a scary word for anyone over the age of 21, although a popular buzzword with positive connotations for management-types who don't mind frying someone as long as it ain't them.

And don't give me that jazz about, "Hey, if yuo don't want the job, then get lost."
