Of course it'll probably be a good thing for Detroit. It's just that hipsters are so damn annoying, that any city facing a mass migration of them is probably taking a deep breath and sighing before saying, "I gueeeessss ...."
The most annoying thing is that, much like New York, San Francisco, parts of New Orleans and anywhere else hipsters/artists move, within a decade they'll make their neighborhoods safer. Peace and love, and having a barter-based economy that's mugging-proof will do that. A crackhead will rob you for $2, but not a bag of beets grown on a rooftop.
So, when the neighborhood gets safer and families start to move in because of the lower crime rate, the area will inevitably undergo gentrification in a decade or so. That brings higher rents, more businesses, more money flowing in, etc. -- all generally good things, to everyone except the hipsters and artists. They'll reminisce about how "real" the neighborhood used to be when they moved in. Ignoring, of course, the fact that "real" meant no police presence, a crack den on the corner, five abandoned buildings per block and a 50-50 chance of getting mugged or killed walking to the local co-op (hipsters don't shop at the Korean grocery on the corner; they're not racist, they just don't eat anything other than locally-grown organic gluten-free produce).
Then they'll complain about the gentrification they helped usher in, and about how much capitalism and America sucks, and move to another town to try the cycle again. It's the 21st century Trail of Tears, except they're whiny tears.
    Hipsters suck.

This is all a tradition for New Yorkers (as well as, I'm sure, folks in many other cities.) You're always hearing about how someone got hold of a converted industrial loft in Soho back in 1967, eventually whacked it up into a dozen apartments, and became a multi-millionaire.

It's also a tradition at the Times, writing trends pieces like this. I can remember articles in the last few years where hipsters were supposedly flocking to the South Bronx ("SoBro!"), the farthest reaches of Queens, Jersey City and a medley of dead-on-their-feet factory towns along the Hudson.
