    Description: Design & paginate news pages, advance and/or specialty feature pages or sections.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
    1. Design deadline news pages, Advance and/or specialty feature pages(s) and/or sections to include jumps & open inside pages. Control design details such as alignment, spacing, fonts, etc.

    2. Use judgment and make good decisions on proper use of art and graphics.

    3. Prepare news budget; attends front page planning sessions.

    4. Extensive use of publishing computer software to aid in design work.

    5. Collaborate with other newsroom professionals in accomplishing tasks.

    6. Present variety of visual options to editors for packaging the day’s news.

    7. Process and archive graphics and photos.

    8. Coordinate graphics & pictures, collaborating with photo editor, to enhance page appeal.

    9. May work with Chief Designer or Presentation Editor to organize design work for daily, advance and special sections.

    10. Check wires frequently for updated copy, corrections and stories of special interest locally.

    11. Proof pages for errors in spelling, grammar and style.

    Required Skills

    1. Must be creative with a good sense of balance; prefer journalist with design skills/knowledge.

    2. Manage numerous assignments at once and work on tight deadlines.

    3. Must be able to accept constructive criticism.

    4. Effectively utilize time, meet strict deadlines, and manage workload productively.

    5. Must have acceptable attendance and punctuality.

    6. Dresses and grooms in an appropriate, professional manner.

    7. Able to work well with others in close environment.

    8. Able to react to change productively.

    9. Willing to work flexible hours as needed to cover design desk’s responsibilities.

    Required Experience
    1. Bachelor's degree (B.A.), preferably in Journalism or English, from a four-year college or university; and some newspaper experience or equivalent.

    2. Minimum of two years of newspaper experience or equivalent.

    3. Working knowledge of people and structure of newsroom and other company operations.
