  1. Let me preface this by saying it's not solely a sports job because we have a universal desk setup, but there will be a ton of sports in it.

    We're looking for someone to add some sports knowledge, experience and forethought into the way this job is done. UGA football is the center of the universe here, and I've been surprised at the almost complete lack of sports experience that's been rolling in from other job sites where this is posted. I think it's easier to adapt from sports to news than the reverse, so sports-only experience won't hinder your chances here if you're interested.

    Plus, our desk has been completely re-built in the last few months, so everyone is still finding their niche. If sports is yours, you could have a big influence on the sports section most days, not to mention a key part of this job will be helping run and update our sites (onlineathens.com, dogbytesonline.com) and social media presences on big sports nights, like during UGA games.

    STATEMENT OF JOB: Motivated, versatile and flexible print designer and online producer with strong design and copy editing skills, sound news judgment and an understanding of social media and multimedia journalism. This position will combine elements of traditional print design along with duties that include promoting work on social media and creating and maintaining web elements to supplement other reporting efforts on OnlineAthens.com, DogBytesOnline.com and other sites. Experience in pagination, social media and multimedia reporting required.

    KEY COMPETENCIES:

    -Print design skills; experience in Adobe InDesign a plus

    -Ability to edit video and photos in Adobe software suite.

    -Working knowledge of HTML and CSS. Experience in other web development languages a plus.

    -Understanding of social media in journalism.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Responsible for working with editors to plan print and design engaging print pages.

    2. Responsible for creating multimedia and social-media elements to supplement online coverage.

    3. Must post content directly to OnlineAthens.com and help innovate coverage with editors and web support staff to meet Morris Communications’ digital-first philosophy.

    4. Must be willing to work some nights and weekends.

    EXPERIENCE

    College Degree

    Two or more years’ daily newspaper experience preferred
