The Herald of New Britain, Conn., is expanding and we need your help. If you can design exciting tabloid pages, and want to spend your evenings talking sports, then this job is for you. We have an immediate opening for a page designer for our daily paper located in central Connecticut. Previous page design experience preferred. Send electronic samples of your work along with a resume to Editor Brian Straight at bstraight@newbritainherald.com or via USPS to Brian Straight, editor, One Herald Square, New Britain, CT 06050. No phone calls.

    Ahem. *cracking knuckles*

The Herald of New Britain, Conn., is expanding (no we're not, we're the JRC and you'll be doing the job of three people but we're hiring one person to replace three so that means expanding) and we need your help (you need a lot more than my help). If you can design exciting (routine) tabloid pages, and want to spend your evenings (crying and wondering why you got into this racket) talking sports, then this job is for you (it does beat sucking dick for crack money). We have an immediate opening (immediate meaning when we feel like getting around to fill it) for a page designer (yeah we know you already asked if I could design excting tabloid pages) for our daily paper located in central Connecticut (ohhh, central Connecticut, fucking awesome, when you have some spare time go ride the Berlin Turnpike). Previous page design experience preferred (we're kidding, if you're willing to work for nothing we'll hire you with no experience at all). Send electronic samples of your work (please don't, Jelenic keeps threatening to get rid of the mailbox to save money) along with a resume to Editor Brian Straight (chances he'll be here when you send your stuff: 10/1) at bstraight@newbritainherald.com or via USPS to Brian Straight, editor, One Herald Square, New Britain, CT 06050. No phone calls (Jelenic got rid of the phone line to go to Aruba).

I worked with a guy who used to work at this place, and the horror stories he had... publisher complaining about dominant color pics (used too much ink) and insisting that EVERY boxscore get in the paper - Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, everyone. Two of many.

So, I guess he'd agree with BYH.

  4. Man, we always get some good material on here when there are job openings in New Britain and Norwich. At last, Connecticut is good for something instead of being the armpit of this fine country.

That's not true! Bridgeport is the armpit of the country, not the entire state of Connecticut!

New Britain, Bridgeport and Norwich, especially, are armpits for sure, and if you take a job at JRC it's been well established that you are not smarter than a fifth-grader. But the Northwest Corner is some of the finest country in America -- Kent, Cornwall, Salisbury, Lakeville, Norfolk, it doesn't get a lot better, as long as you don't need to earn a living in journalism there.

I've always said that Providence is the armpit and Camden is the crotch.

If you want to suck c*ck for crack, then New Britain is a fine place. And the Berlin Turnpike has some of the finest (ahem) gentlemen's clubs around and the motels all rent by the hour. NB and Bridgeport do suck, but they're nowhere as bad as Newark...Norwich has the casino nearby and there is a lot of investment going into the town from the Indians.

As for the paper, the Courant does a fine job in covering Central CT. (my 2-cents)

Yeah, but the NW Corner also has Torrington. Give me the SE corner any day. At least I can drown myself in salt water if so desired.

An excellent point to which I could not disagree. Hard to top the Mystic-Stonington area and I'm actually staring at a photo of the Saybrook breakwater lighthouse in my office.

The publisher in New Britain was fired last month, and he was once one of JRC's fair-haired boys. They gave him the infamous JRC escort out the door, and took his company car keys, cell phone, once outside. No report as to whether they took his shoes and pants as well.

Yes, but the view is much better on the shore.
