    Oh, and one tip I picked up a few months ago: Increase the size of your gutters, thus forcing more white space into your page. It'll come out looking cleaner and you'll find ways around the lost space.

    Gomer, thanks for the tip, I'll try that. Maybe go to a four column front with the rail not included
     
  3. sigh. It is hard to say this, but I'd take your situation. At least you have more of the page to deal with, even though you have to design around two really horribly- placed ads. I think we all know that the role of the designer is changing at most mid-sized and smaller papers. these situations just further illustrate it.
