I don't think there's any doubt that there's some ego involved in having the sendoff season, but the announcement really is good for the team because it allows them to begin planning for his successor and takes off any and all pressure on management.

It also eliminates any potential distractions from talk about his contract status and what he'll do next season, which most assuredly is a topic that would have come up in the second half of the season.

And, not for anything, but Mariano probably told him how sweet it was to have teams across the league genuflect with each road trip.

No, no. He is selflessly doing this to take the focus off A-Rod and put it back on the team. He could play another 10 years if he wanted. /Manky

In all fairness, the ones for the Fenway finale come with an 8-pack of D-Cells and this T-shirt:

Alas, Manky didn't make the cut.

So he's the only major leaguer who never dated Alyssa Milano?

He didn't have to make it public to allow the team to start planning for life without Jeter. He could have just told them without telling everybody else.

This is all about Jeter doing for himself, which is fine. He deserves it, but let's not make this anything but what it is.

If Rivera were truly a humble man he would have called that ridiculousness off around July.

Jetes had 216 hits his last full season...he clearly has a lot left in the tank. Omar Visquel was only half the player Jeter is and he played until he was 45. Jeter's place in history is secure even if he does retire, but he's giving up the chance at breaking Pete Rose's hit record.

Pujols described Jeter as Christ-like. If I expressed that opinion on here, I would be mocked. He's right, though.
