As if traffic on I-95 is not congested enough, now watch out for the flood of gamblers riding down from Philly and the NYC area ...

    Don't hold your breath.

And the State will probably dazzle us with 2-1 odds on two-team parlays, or some similar insult to those who enjoy basic, rudimentary math skills.

You want to compete with street bookies, offer what they offer (excepting credit, of course).

It's not the first time Delaware lawmakers have debated the idea. At least two times this decade a bill has been introduced that would do this, but they never went anywhere. Some of the old style Democrats (conservative Dems that have been in office since the 1960s or so) in the Senate make sure it never goes anywhere, and while they've been dying off of late, Thurman Adams is still in charge in the Senate. The legislature is in session until June 30th, and while I'd be stunned if it passed at all, I'd be more stunned if it passed before the last week of June.

Likewise, this governor was a bit of an upset winner in the primary, beating the choice of the establishment. He's not completely supported by his own party just yet.

That said, this idea has been festering for a few years in Dover and I think it's eventually going to happen. The state would be stupid not to.

If you've seen states trying to one-up their neighbors for gambling profits, you realize this will happen somewhere. There's too much money at stake for it NOT to happen and we all know how much our legislators love to see that cash coming in that is not called a tax.

West Virginia OKs slots; Pennsylvania sees the flood of people taking their money there, so Pennsylvania OKs slots; West Virginia notices the dropoff in customers and approves table games . . .

I'm surprised the idea of sports betting hasn't advanced further in Atlantic City, where customers and profits are down big-time.

The reason it hasn't advanced forward in Atlantic City is because New Jersey has to jump through TWO hoops to get it done. Jersey is not one of the states permitted to have sports gambling, so it must petition the federal government. IN order to do that, it must get public approval. So it needs a public election win, federal approval, then a full house/senate win. It may one day happen, but it will take a little while.

Delaware, however, has the federal permission. It only needs state permission, and the old governor never would have allowed it. This new governor is in favor, so it will probably happen much sooner than NJ. However, Delaware law says gambling must be "a game of chance," so it will most likely require parlays with bad odds only, not straight up gambling. It will be popular, but it sure as hell won't be Vegas.

I thought New Jersey was the third state that already has federal permission to host sports betting?

    3-1 this doesn't happen.

If I need to parlay that, put me down as a no as well to Atlanta passing casino gambling.

Pete Rose is already polishing off his "I always loved Delaware when I played for the Phillies..." speech.
