What does soon mean in the job hunt? An editor said he'd get back to me soon. It was two weeks ago and he seemed a little snippy when I asked for an update via e-mail.

In my book, soon usually means within a few days.

In job search lingo soon means somewhere between "I don't know" and "never."

Seriously, hiring folks are usually specific if they can be. If they are not, it means that the job is up in the air somehow.

If he mean a few days. He would have said by next week or something.

"Soon" basically means "whenever I damn well feel like it and don't bother me until then."

Ask whoever got the job how long it took him to hear about it.

Well, this girl in college said she'd go out with me soon enough....I graduated over two decades ago and haven't heard from her.

    Urban dictionary definition seems fitting.

When I asked about the hiring timetable at an interview, I got "we're fast-tracking" the job. I've heard nothing. The interview was in March.

I figured if you make it to the interview stage, you'd at least get a "thank you for playing, but..." I've never heard another peep from them.
