New York ad exec steps into an elevator on her way to the office. The doors close on her, she gets stuck and the elevator suddenly shoots up, crushing her between floors
Two people in the elevator who watched her die were taken to the hospital for "treatment of psychological trauma."
Definitely not a way I want to go.

Elevator Injury Leads to Indictment of Repairman

A day after an advertising executive was crushed to death in her office elevator in Midtown Manhattan, a different elevator accident — resulting in the mutilation of a woman last Christmas — has led to the indictment of an elevator repairman.

Charles J. Hynes, the Brooklyn district attorney, said on Thursday that the repairman, Jason Jordan, 27, had taken a shortcut in repairing a critical elevator locking safety system at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, and then compounded the error by not shutting down the elevator or calling a second technician.

As a result, Mr. Hynes said, Deborah Jordan, who is not related to Mr. Jordan, suffered grievous injury, and is still in a rehabilitation center.

Like Suzanne Hart, who was killed in Wednesday’s accident, Ms. Deborah Jordan got into an elevator that began moving rapidly upward before the doors even closed. The doors then trapped Ms. Jordan, her left leg and left arm hanging outside the car as it shot up seven floors through the elevator shaft.

“As screams could be heard throughout the hospital as she passed each floor, unable to free herself from this nightmare,” Mr. Hynes said, “we allege that what happened to Ms. Jordan was a direct result of the criminal conduct of the defendant.”

An elevator locking system, which exists on each floor of every standard elevator, according to prosecutors, restricts the elevator from moving if a person is blocking the doors.

But what was “truly disturbing” to Mr. Hynes was Mr. Jordan’s actions immediately after the accident.

“While hospital staff and members of the Fire Department hurried to save Ms. Jordan, the defendant, seeing what he had done, fled the hospital without saying a word or offering help,” Mr. Hynes said.

A grand jury this week returned charges against Mr. Jordan, the most serious being assault in the first degree (because there was an element of foreseeability, Mr. Hynes said) and reckless endangerment. Mr. Jordan was to be arraigned on Thursday, and the district attorney said he would ask for “substantial bail.” Mr. Jordan could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

“The juxtaposition between the death of that poor woman recently and what happened to Ms. Jordan has gotten everyone concerned,” Mr. Hynes said.

The state of New York does not require any kind of certification or licensing of elevator contracting, he added.

A bill currently sponsored by Keith L. T. Wright, an assemblyman from Manhattan, is aimed at requiring licensing and continued training of operators.

Lawrence Oh, the Rackets Division bureau chief prosecuting the case, demonstrated how the authorities contend Mr. Jordan used a shortcut in determining the problem with the elevator locking system, instead of manually checking every floor’s lock.

That particular elevator, Mr. Oh said, had been shut down earlier, but Mr. Jordan allowed it to run while he was working on it. Ms. Jordan, who was visiting a patient at the hospital, stepped onto the elevator, with her young daughter left behind in horror, as the doors closed onto her leg and arm.

Fire rescue personnel applied the jaws of life and eventually used a gas-powered saw to extricate Ms. Jordan. She spent three months in Kings County Hospital Center, before being transferred to a rehabilitation center that prosecutors declined to disclose.

“Thank God she is recovering, but it’s a very long process,” Mr. Hynes said.

I got my hand caught in an elevator at Indianapolis Motor Speedway a few years ago trying catch it before the door closed. It took every bit of strength I had to get it out ... and I had a nice bruise for a week or two afterwards.

I'm going to sue Tony George for everything he's worth ... wait ... Bernie Madoff already got it all. Never mind.
