Deadspin: Don't blame us for that made-up story we published!

That edge Deadspin site decided to post stories about asshole coaches. Or stories about what people say certain coaches did that made them assholes. An anonymous emailer sent them a story about Arizona State baseball coach Pat Murphy, and what a big asshole he was one night. The emailer remained anonymous most likely because he made the whole thing up.

Now Deadspin has taken down the story and basically posted a, eh, shit happens retraction. And it's not their fault at all but the guy who sent the email:

  2. I read that piece of shit post and knew it was full of shit and holes.
Saw last night they took the story down and posted a corrected version of events from ASU AD.
Deadspin really, really sucks. Anything they get goes up and Fuck fact checking.
Maybe the Fozzie Bear joke should be shifted to deadspin. It is waaaay, waaay worse the TBL used to be.

    Fail.

Uh, dudes, it's not a one-sided version you are printing if you don't know the anonymous emailer who sent it to you.

    It's a no-sided version.

    But keep on being edgy!

It was a dumb story to begin with, even if it were true. If it's a story about your coach being a dick to you, it's fair to publish a one-sided memoir account, but this was kind of story, a public figure being abusive to a normal person, that should have been presented to someone at ASU for vetting or a simple denial. Deadspin's big enough to get a quick callback.

They were idiots for running it in the first place, but to Deadspin's credit the retraction is played just like the original and not two column inches on A5.

ASU's SID (well, assistant SID) did have a say in the matter...

You think Pete Rose would have learned by now.

  9. After reading the original story and emailing Deadspin to call bullshit.

it was obvious that original story was bullshit by the detailed "quotes" related by the asshole autograph-seeker. nobody can remember quotes word for word like that. you'd think someone at Deadspin could have seen that. except that they don't give a crap.

    So sick of Deadspin.

Bottom line: You should believe this stuff except when you shouldn't and it's not our fault that you don't know the difference, we're just here for the fun except for when we really mean it!
