DeNiro is 67. Lombardi died at the age of 57.

Hell, let's go back 10 years...

Everybody's Fine (2009) .... Frank Goode - Mediocre at best.
Righteous Kill (2008) .... Tom 'Turk' Cowan - Awful
Stardust (2007) .... Captain Shakespeare - Didn't see, but it bombed.
The Good Shepherd (2006) .... Bill Sullivan - Good film, but he had a very small part
Hide and Seek (2005) .... David Callaway - Awful movie.
The Bridge of San Luis Rey (2004) .... Archbishop of Peru - Never heard of it
Meet the Fockers (2004) .... Jack Byrnes - Good film. Another supporting role.
Shark Tale (2004) (voice) .... Don Lino - Awful, even for a kid's movie
Godsend (2004) .... Richard Wells - Maybe his worst movie ever.
Analyze That (2002) .... Paul Vitti - Terrible.
City by the Sea (2002) .... Vincent LaMarca - Dreadfully boring.
Showtime (2002) .... Det. Mitch Preston - Awful
The Score (2001) .... Nick Wells - I actually liked this movie.
    15 Minutes (2001) .... Detective Eddie Flemming - Awful
Meet the Parents (2000) .... Jack Byrnes - Good in a supporting role.
Men of Honor (2000) .... Chief 'Billy' Sunday - Good movie.
The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000) .... Fearless Leader - Awful

To be fair, he did bring some Taxi Driver to the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle:

I think I remember reading that he made them pay extra for that.

So who's the better football coach - DeNiro at Lombardi or Pacino as Tony D'Amato?

DeNiro does an awful Elmo... (skip to the 1:35 mark)

I'd like to see Jack Black in this role.

    Isn't 67 the new 57?

Does an actor have to be the same age as the character he's playing?

No but they can't be WAYYYYY older in a role (that to be done right) is gonna require a fair amount of physical action. Unless the whole movie will consist of Lombardi standing on the sidelines in his porkpie hat.

If the movie moves back through Lombardi's career (the early years in GB) even on a cursory basis, DeNiro is not going to be 10 years too old for the role, but 20.

Buck's idea is a good one. Jack Black would be a good pick for a young, fiery, physical Lombardi.
