When U2 did the Popmart concert, they had a bit where they led the entire stadium crowd in a sing-along of "Daydream Believer." Fun stuff.

The prefab four wouldn't have had the greatest songwriters of their time who were not Lennon-McCartney writng songs for them if not for Kirschner. If Nesmith would have not stopped at Different Drum as far as writing hits for otherrs, and if he had decided to take an ownership stake in MTV instead of just a consulting fee, he'd be the Bill Gates of music

Ah, Kirshner was as bad as Nesmith. If he didn't get it his way, he was taking his ball and going home.

Nesmith to Kirshner: "You see this wall? This wall could be you." (punches hole in hotel-room wall)

Damn, this makes me sad. The Monkees were a huge part of my girlhood and I loved them unconditionally. Davy was always my favourite, too.

Once you get by their tv antics The Monkees really had a great body of work.

My favorite and still in my rotation:

    Brilliant.

And for a fake band, they had some really, really great songs. RIP.

    Fake band to an extent.

They did their own singing. They didn't play their instruments.

    Bullshit. They did on Headquarters.

    post-Kirshner, right?

I mean, yes, they DID play their instruments and liked to think they played them very well.

Don Kirshner disagreed and steadfastly refused to let them play on their early albums.

What's really kind of funny and quite telling was that, if I'm not mistaken, it was fairly common knowledge in the music world at that time, but you didn't hear much about it otherwise. It was like the old baseball writers not "seeing" the drinking and womanizing of the Babe Ruth era.
