The early version of Derek Fenner.

  2. I don't know that school of thought is out of line. If I didn't have a good-to-great QB, I'd go with a game-manger; a QB who isn't going to lose the game with stupid turnovers, ala Geno Smith.

Rex and the Jets have never gotten a capable running back to replace Curtis Martin. And aside from Revis have they drafted any really good defensive players? I'm not sure there defense has ever been anything better than somewhat above average.

The Dallas defense is doing much better than expected, mostly because it was expected to be epicly bad. Last year the Cowboys had one of the worst defensive seasons in NFL history and some good players were subtracted from that group.

This year, their stats are middle of the road, mostly because they aren't on the field that much. The one thing they have done pretty well is force turnovers. But their pass rush is invisible -- they're near the bottom of the league in sacks -- and their secondary is suspect at best and coverage-challenged as worst. Last night, DeSean Jackson got open deep whenever he felt like it -- McCoy just didn't have the arm to get it out there for a TD.

That's why the Cards, with Palmer passing and some of the speed they have at WR, should hit on several big plays Sunday.

Geno Smith isn't the type to lose games with stupid turnovers?

Evil is saying he is exactly that type.

I am fascinated by how badly professional personnel types miss on quarterbacks. Over and over again.

Someone needs to use a Roy McAvoy reference for Week 12.

    No

Thomas Jones was a highly capable RB for The Jets-3 1000 yd seasons in a row with 1400 yds in 2009 then Tannenbaum started his work dismantling ground and pound which was perfect system for Sanchez as game mgr and Rex defense.

They did not resign Jones who went on to KC for 2 more serviceable seasons, they also did not resign Pro Bowl G Alan Faneca, OT Damien Woody and FB Tony Richardson. They did bring in Ladainian Tomlonson but he was not Jones although they did once again make it to AFC Championship.

That's when The Jets started to turn to shit. They asked Sanchez to be more than a game manager and did not give him the weapons.

I am convinced QBs are consistently drafted higher than their scouting report grades indicate, just because teams without a QB are so desperate to find one. Does anyone believe guys like Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder and E.J. Manuel really had high first-round grades, or that Blake Bortles really had the third-highest grade on anyone's board?

Teams without a QB will reach -- sometimes very far -- to get one in the first round because the pressure is so great to get someone in there and see if he turns into something.

Witness the '11 draft. Ponder, Gabbert and Locker go 8, 10 and 12, respectively. That isn't just horrifying in retrospect. Those were ghastly picks the moment Uncle Roger walked to the podium.

Meant to ask about this earlier, but who is David Sims?

Alternately, how does a Colts practice squad DB who wears No. 38 merit his own thread title?

Regardless of who is coaching or the GM for the Jets next year, the Jets need to just come out and say they are rebuilding. That won't eliminate all grumbling from NY fans and the media, but they'll eventually move on, instead of the NY media immediately diving into the "playoffs or bust" narrative.

Then you bring in a QB who you know is going to be a backup. Signing Michael Vick was a bad idea, simply because his name value alone gave the media an excuse to say QUARTERBACK CONTROVERSY. Sign Matt Moore or Tarvaris Jackson or Jason Campbell, because nobody in the NY media will play them up as having a chance to start for the long haul. Yeah, they'll stick focus on whoever the Jets draft, but with QBs taken early in drafts, that always comes with the territory.

Then don't run around signing free agents who have big names attached them. Meaning the Jets shouldn't even think about talking to Darrelle Revis. There are talented players set to become free agents, who don't have "big names" attached to them, but could still fill needs.

As for Rex Ryan, I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Falcons as the team he needs to coach next year. Ryan seems to do better with teams that have a lot of veterans and talented players already on the roster, because his mentality is "win now" and you can only "win now" if you have a lot of talent on the roster. The Falcons don't have the perfect roster, but they are closer to a team that can make the playoffs than the Jets are at this point.
