It looks like the group that starts play Saturday will be the more difficult group to win.

OK, rookie question here, but do they try to group the teams in East-West order?

Back in the day -- like, say, when four teams from the SEC West made it to Omaha (LSU, Miss. State, Alabama and Auburn in '97) -- they took another tack. The next year, I think it was LSU, State and Florida. Anyway, they seeded teams after the old six-team regionals, and they put three SEC teams on one side of the bracket, and another on the other side.

Now, it's all pre-determined. And even though the SEC didn't do so hot -- State bein' the only SEC team to make it to Omaha -- it's not at all unusual for one SEC team to be playing another to get to Rosenblatt. Georgia beat the Chickens last year to go.

That said, the College World Series is dripped in corn pone from here until eternity. Still fun if you can find something to do when not working.

It's all pre-determined, but interesting that all the teams west of the Rockies were placed in the 8 regionals that would result in them all being in the same bracket once it got to the round of 16.

Then Irvine won two series on the road, and Oregon State won at Charlottesville and then caught a break when Michigan upset Vandy and couldn't host. Presto, a West Coast side.

The Irvine or Fullerton release this week went so far as to semi-seriously suggest a conspiracy against the Big West.

We Shall Overcome -- This should be the motto for Fullerton and UCI teams in Omaha.

If the Tar Heels can learn to get a lead early, they might be unstoppable. It's as if they think they have to give the other team a few runs before they can crank up the offense.

Rice-Louisville could break out into a slugfest.

If anyone is heading to Omaha on assignment, have fun. I hear Council Bluffs has a nice casino. ;)

This is kind of off-topic, but there is talk that the NCAA may pull the CWS out of Omaha when the current contract ends in 2010. Omaha city officials are toying with the idea of renovating Rosenblatt, turning Rosenblatt over to the NCAA and the Omaha Royals get a new crib north downtown (or vice versa), or build a new crib and replace Rosenblatt.

It may not mean much right now, but once 2008 rolls around, it could become a hot topic for the good folks there and the worry that the NCAA may move it.

A good deal of the College World Series' appeal is the fact that it's played in Omaha. It's as if the eight best baseball teams meet in the middle of America to decide who's best. If you move it around, you lose a lot of that luster.

A new stadium? Fine. A new city? No way.

The NCAA would be damned foolish to move it, and right there you have to wonder if it's not likely to happen.

    Where could it move?

At minimum, it's a 12-day road trip for a major league team. Is a major league team going to volunteer for that kind of trip? If so, which one?

Is there another minor-league facility able to host it? Rosenblatt (24,000) has the largest listed capacity in Triple A. Portland (19,000) or Buffalo (18,000) are the closest. Could those expand enough to host?

Is there an open stadium out there to host it? The SEC tournament was at the Superdome many years ago. A fun time wasn't had by all. L.A. Coliseum? Heck, the Dodgers played there, right? Candlestick? Puerto Rico?

Havana? It is amateur baseball. ;D
