I am very new to freelance journalism (stringers) and am very curious and interested in joining your ranks but I need to gage if in my area there is an actual need. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah so any info would be awesome!!!

Look up the schedules for University of Utah, BYU, Salt Lake Community College, etc and see which opponents are coming to play in SLC. Then look up the newspapers that cover those teams, email them and see if they'd be interested in having you string the game for them.

One tip is to always spell-check your stories, no matter how long.

Park City holds lots of Winter Olympic sports. Digging ahead of time to find which athletes will be there and then contacting their hometown papers for coverage/feature stories.
